Intent

Our Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) curriculum at Newburgh Primary School aims to ignite a passion for language learning among our Key Stage 2 students. We believe that acquiring a new language is a gateway to understanding diverse cultures, broadening horizons, and developing essential communication skills. Our intent is to cultivate confident, enthusiastic learners who appreciate the value of multilingualism in our interconnected world.

 

Our objectives are:

Cultural Awareness: To foster an appreciation and respect for different cultures and traditions through immersive language experiences.

Communication Skills: To develop the ability to understand and communicate in a foreign language, both verbally and in writing.

Cognitive Development: To enhance cognitive abilities such as memory, problem-solving, and critical thinking through language learning.

Confidence and Enjoyment: To build confidence in speaking and understanding a new language and to instil a lifelong enjoyment of language learning.

Implementation

During Key Stage 2, our MFL curriculum is designed to introduce students to the basics of a modern foreign language, with a focus on practical communication.

This will involve:

Listening and Speaking: Engage students in listening to native speakers and responding through simple conversations, role-plays, and songs.

Reading and Writing: Introduce basic reading and writing tasks, including familiar vocabulary, phrases, and simple sentence structures.

Cultural Exposure: Provide insights into the culture, traditions, and daily life of countries where the language is spoken through stories, celebrations, and multimedia resources.

Interactive Learning: Utilize games, interactive activities, and technology to make language learning fun and engaging.

 

This will be carried out through:

Weekly Lessons: Regular, dedicated MFL lessons each week to build and reinforce language skills progressively.

Cross-Curricular Links: Integrate language learning with other subjects to create meaningful connections and contextual learning experiences.

Authentic Resources: Use authentic materials such as songs, stories, and videos to provide real-life context and enrich the learning experience.

Assessment and Feedback: Continuous assessment through informal methods such as observations, quizzes, end of topic tasks and class participation to guide and support student progress.

 

Impact

By the end of Key Stage 2, students will have a foundational understanding of a modern foreign language, feel confident in basic communication, and have a positive attitude towards further language learning. They will be well-prepared for the next stage of their language education, equipped with skills that will benefit them academically and personally in our diverse world.
