This school year we have been implementing the PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) Programme across our school called Jigsaw, the mindful approach to PSHE. The lessons, since September, have built children’s emotional literacy, self-esteem and knowledge of who they are and how they relate to each other and the world in a positive and healthy way.
In Summer term 2 the children will be following the Puzzle piece ‘Changing Me’. The Changing Me Puzzle includes 2 or 3 lessons, in every class, to help children understand the changes which happen to their bodies as they get older. There is a serious safeguarding aspect to this work, we know that our younger children being able to use the correct terminology to name their body parts keeps them safe. The foundation work with younger children leads them to normalise talking about relationships, and across KS2 talking about puberty and human reproduction. More than ever our primary children are exposed to unregulated content on the Internet and we wish to prepare them for this by presenting a balanced view of positive healthy relationships.
However, we do as always want to work in partnership with parents and carers, and also wish to inform you of your legal right to withdraw your children from some aspects of this work. Whilst most of this unit is statutory the right to withdraw applies to a couple of lessons in Years 4, 5 and 6 that covers ‘Human Reproduction’.
